Essay on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Example For Students

Article on Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart was presumably the best virtuoso in Western melodic history. He was conceived in Salzberg, Austria on January 27, 1756. The child of Leopold Mozart and his better half Anna Maria Pertl. Leopold was a fruitful author and musician and aide concertmaster at the Salzberg court. At three years old, Wolfgang gave indications of exceptional melodic ability. He figured out how to play the harpsichord, a console instrument identified with the piano, at four years old. Wolfgang started creating minuets at five years old. At the point when he was just six years of age, he and his more established sister, Anna Maria, set out on a progression of show visits to Europe’s courts and significant urban areas. They played for the Austrian Empress Maria Theresa at her court in Vienna in 1762. The two youngsters played the console, yet Wolfgang turned into a violin virtuoso also. Before he was fourteen, Mozart had formed numerous works called sonatas for the harpsichord, piano, or the violin just as instrumental and different works. His dad perceived Wolfgang’s astounding ability and committed a great deal of his opportunity to his son’s general and melodic training. Wolfgang never went to class; his dad took him to show visits through quite a bit of Europe. Wolfgang formed, gave open exhibitions, met numerous artists and played the organ in numerous chapels. In 1769, similar to his dad before him, he started working for the diocese supervisor of Salzburg, who likewise governed the territory. The Mozarts regularly fought with the ecclesiastical overseer, mostly in light of the fact that Wolfgang was frequently missing from Salzburg. The diocese supervisor excused youthful Mozart in 1781. Mozart was really happy to leave Salzburg, a humble community, and look for his fortune in Vienna , one of the music capitals in Europe. At this point individuals apparatus less notification of him since he was not, at this point a kid wonder. In any case, he was a splendid entertainer and dynamic as an orchestrator. A lot to his father’s alarm, Mozart wedded Constanze Weber from Germany in 1782. He didn't have a standard activity in Vienna and attempted t o win a living by selling his structures, giving open exhibitions, and giving music exercises. None of these exercises delivered enough pay to help his family. He even ventured out to Germany for the crowning ceremony of another head, yet his shows there didn't draw in as much consideration as he had trusted. He passed on in neediness on December 5, 1791. He was given a modest memorial service at Saint Stephen’s Cathedral and covered in a plain grave at the burial ground of Saint Marx. Mozart exceeded expectations in pretty much every sort of melodic piece. A few of his twenty-two dramas increased overall acknowledgment not long after his passing, they despite everything please crowds everywhere throughout the world. The Marriage of Figaro (1786) and Don Giovanni (1787) are shows he made with words in Italian. The Magic Flute (1791) has German words. Each of these contains arias (lovely tunes for artists), recitative (Rapidly sung discourse), groups in which a few people sing simultaneously, and themes. The ensemble gives an ever-changing expressive backup. The show ranges from parody to catastrophe. Mozart composed more than forty ensembles, a considerable lot of which are performed today. Some initially were suggestions (symphonic presentations) for shows, and last just a couple of moments. His later ensembles, which are the most well known, are full-length symphonic creations that last twenty to thirty minutes. The majority of them comprise of four segments. Moz art’s last and most popular ensemble, Number 41 (1788), is nicknamed the Jupiter. Mozart made an extraordinary sum out of chapel music, the vast majority of it for execution at the Salzburg Cathedral. He composed Masses and shorter pieces called motets; and he set up hymns with a good soundtrack, particularly for the day or night administration. The music is wonderful and fluctuated. It incorporates choral and solo parts, generally with joining by organ and ensemble. Mozart’s most popular holy work is the Requiem (Mass for the Dead). He started it in the most recent year of his life and keeping in mind that composing it is said to have thought about his own demise. Portions of the Requiem were formed during his last disease. He passed on before the work was done. Mozart composed other, for the most part lighter, symphonic works, called serenades. Some were planned for outside execution. One has gotten notable as Eine kleine Nachtmusik (A Little Night Music, 1787). Mozart likewise composed numerous structures called concertos for a performance instrument, fo r example, the violin or piano, with symphonic backup. He regularly had the performance influence. For an incredible duration Mozart created orchestral compositions works for few instruments in which just a single artist has each impact. .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d , .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d .postImageUrl , .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d .focused content zone { min-stature: 80px; position: relative; } .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d , .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d:hover , .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d:visited , .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d:active { border:0!important; } .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d .clearfix:after { content: ; show: table; clear: both; } .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d { show: square; change: foundation shading 250ms; webkit-progress: foundation shading 250ms; width: 100%; haziness: 1; change: murkiness 250ms; webkit-progress: mistiness 250ms; foundation shading: #95A5A6; } .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d:active , .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d:hover { darkness: 1; change: obscurity 250ms; webkit-progress: murkiness 250ms; foundation shading: #2C3E50; } .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d .focused content territory { width: 100%; position: relati ve; } .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d .ctaText { outskirt base: 0 strong #fff; shading: #2980B9; text dimension: 16px; textual style weight: intense; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; text-adornment: underline; } .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d .postTitle { shading: #FFFFFF; text dimension: 16px; text style weight: 600; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; width: 100%; } .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d .ctaButton { foundation shading: #7F8C8D!important; shading: #2980B9; fringe: none; outskirt sweep: 3px; box-shadow: none; text dimension: 14px; textual style weight: striking; line-tallness: 26px; moz-fringe span: 3px; text-adjust: focus; text-design: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-stature: 80px; foundation: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/modules/intelly-related-posts/resources/pictures/straightforward arrow.png)no-rehash; position: supreme; right: 0; top: 0; } .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d:hover .ctaButton { foundation shading: #34495E!important; } .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340 e451441102d .focused content { show: table; stature: 80px; cushioning left: 18px; top: 0; } .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d-content { show: table-cell; edge: 0; cushioning: 0; cushioning right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-adjust: center; width: 100%; } .u8e4a8195b8968a8234340e451441102d:after { content: ; show: square; clear: both; } READ: Themes The Three Major Themes Are Love, Loyalty, An EssayMozart focused on string groups of four (two violins, viola, and cello). He was affected in this by Haydn, whose groups of four he appreciated. He committed six groups of four to Haydn. Mozart’s sonatas for piano and for violin and piano are extraordinary. The piano was still genuinely new and was broadly played by novices. More than some other arranger, Mozart assisted with making the instrument mainstream. His tunes for piano had a singing, supported quality, with steady changes among delicate and uproarious. Regardless of his difficulties and disillusionments as an autho r, a lot of Mozart’s music is sprightly and incredible. He had a comical inclination and enjoyed quips and handy jokes. He formed many lighter works. These sytheses incorporate the drama Cosi Fan Tutte (All Women Are Like That, 1790), a lot of his initial instrumental music, and standards (adjusts) with drivel words. Mozart additionally created profoundly genuine music. His most significant works remember the piano concerto for D minor, a few string groups of four, the string quintet in G minor, and his last three orchestras E level major, G minor, and the Jupiter. Bigger works may contain both genuine and light components, as wears Giovanni. Mozart had a place with the Order of Freemasons and composed a few arrangements for their gatherings. A few scenes from his fantasy show The Magic Flute was propelled by Masonic customs and convictions. A list of Mozart’s works was first arranged by Ludwig Kochel (1800-1877), a German music sweetheart. Today, Mozart’s works are as yet recognized by the number Kochel doled out to them. Today Mozart’s music is notable and appreciated all through the world. His structures keep on applying a specific interest for artists and music sweethearts today. Definition and Examples of Juxtaposition in Art

In the  composition  of any artwork, juxtaposition is the placing of elements side by side, leaving it up to the reader to establish connections and discover or  impose a meaning. These elements (words, clauses, or sentences, in written composition) may be drawn from different sources and juxtaposed to form a literary collage. Careful planning and craft  by the writer in choosing what elements to juxtapose can provide layers of meaning, present irony, or paint a scene with a lot of detail and depth, putting the reader right in the middle of it all. Example From H.L. Mencken Watchmen at lonely railroad crossings in Iowa, hoping that theyll be able to get off to hear the United Brethren evangelist preach...Ticket-sellers in the subway, breathing sweat in its gaseous form...Farmers plowing sterile fields behind sad meditative horses, both suffering from the bites of insects...Grocery-clerks trying to make assignations with soapy servant girls...Women confined for the ninth or tenth time, wondering helplessly what it is all about.(H.L. Mencken, Diligence. A Mencken Chrestomathy, 1949) Example From Samuel Beckett We live and learn, that was a true saying. Also, his teeth and jaws had been in heaven, splinters of vanquished toast spraying forth at each gnash. It was like eating glass. His mouth burned and ached with the exploit. Then the food had been further spiced up by the intelligence, transmitted in a low tragic voice across the counter by Oliver the improver, that the Malahide murderer’s petition for mercy, signed by half the land, having been rejected, the man must swing at dawn in Mountjoy and nothing could save him. Ellis the hangman was even now on his way. Belacqua, tearing at the sandwich and swilling the precious stout, pondered on McCabe in his cell.(Samuel Beckett, Dante and the Lobster. Samuel Beckett: Poems, Short Fiction, and Criticism, ed. by Paul Auster. Grove Press, 2006) Ironic Juxtaposition Juxtaposition is not just for comparison of the similar but also to contrast the dissimilar, which can be effective for emphasizing a writers message or illustrating a concept. Ironic juxtaposition is the fancy term for what happens when two disparate things are placed side by side, each commenting on the other...Olivia Judson, a science writer, uses this technique to tweak our interest in what could be a stultifying subject, the female green spoon worm: The green spoon worm has one of the most extreme size differences known to exist between male and female, the male being 200,000 times smaller than his mate. Her lifespan is a couple of years. His is only a couple of months—and he spends his short life inside her reproductive tract, regurgitating sperm through his mouth to fertilize her eggs. More ignominious still, when he was first discovered, he was thought to be a nasty parasitic infestation.(from Seed magazine) The authors point of view is a sly wink, the humiliation of the minuscule male sea creature serving as an emblem for his crude and increasingly miniaturized human counterpart. The juxtaposition is between worm sex and human sex. (Roy Peter Clark, Writing Tools: 50 Essential Strategies for Every Writer. Little, Brown and Company, 2006) Haiku Of course, the technique is not limited to prose. Poetry can make fine use of it, even in the smallest of works, to present images next to each other to illustrate, portray  meaning, or even surprise or puzzle the reader, such as in  17th- and 18th-century Japanese haiku: Haiku 1Harvest moon:On the bamboo matPine tree shadows.Haiku 2Wooden gate.Lock firmly bolted:Winter moon. ...In each case, there is only an implicit connection between the elements on either side of the colon. Although it is possible to see a causal relation between a harvest moon and pine tree shadows, the lack of explicit connections forces the reader to make an imaginative leap. The connection between a locked wooden gate and a winter moon demands an even greater imaginative effort. In each poem, there is a basic juxtaposition between a natural image and a human one—a harvest moon and a bamboo mat, a bolted gate and a winter moon—which creates a tension between the first and second part.(Martin Montgomery et al., Ways of Reading: Advanced Reading Skills for Students of English Literature, 2nd ed. Routledge, 2000) Juxtaposition in Art, Video, and Music But juxtaposition isnt confined  to literature. It can be in paintings, such as in surrealists or other abstract artists works: The Surrealist tradition...is united by the idea of destroying conventional meanings, and creating new meanings or counter-meanings through radical juxtaposition (the collage principle). Beauty, in the words of Lautrà ©amont, is the fortuitous encounter of a sewing machine and an umbrella on a dissecting table....The Surrealist sensibility aims to shock, through its techniques of radical juxtaposition. (Susan Sontag, Happenings: An Art of Radical Juxtaposition. Against Interpretation, and Other Essays. Farrar, Straus Giroux, 1966) It can appear in pop culture, such as in films and video: Pressed to its limits, artistic  juxtaposition  becomes  what is sometimes termed  pastiche. The goal of this tactic, which has been employed in both high-culture and pop-culture contexts (e.g., MTV videos), is to barrage the viewer with incongruous, even clashing images that call into question any sense of objective meaning. (Stanley James Grenz, A Primer on Postmodernism. Wm. B. Eerdmans, 1996) And juxtaposition  can be a part of music as well:  Another model for such work, and related to hypertext because of its ability to interconnect a wide variety of ideas and texts, are the DJ samples that comprise a great deal of hip-hop. (Jeff R. Rice, The Rhetoric of Cool: Composition Studies and New Media. Southern Illinois University Press, 2007)

The Academic Performance At Central Falls High School

Central Falls, Rhode Island, is located just outside of the Providence, the capital of Rhode Island. The diversity of the Central Falls community is echoed by looking at the high schools’ 800-member student body. Within the number of students the birthplaces represented are Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Columbia, Guatemala, Cape Verde and United States. The school bodies’ aggregate ethnic breakdown is calculated as 72 percent Hispanic, 15 percent Black, and 13 percent White (Donnelly Rochefort, 2011). The school system is the pushing force behind achieving the hopes and dreams of the students. Educational Statistics The academic performance at Central Falls High School (CFHS) has historically trailed behind the average school performance numbers for the state of Rhode Island. According to the article, 271 freshmen entered Central Falls High School in 2005, but only 47 percent reached graduation four years later. Other data revealed that other 33.5 percent of the students dropped out, 12.5 percent were held back, and 7 percent received a General Equivalency Diploma. Data also revealed that only 55 percent of the student body was considered to be proficient in reading and only 7 percent proficient in math. These statistics showed little improvement by 2008, where the math proficiency rose another 3 percent (Donnelly Rochefort, 2011). The Life Of A Poet ! Essays - John Keats, Fanny Brawne,

The Life Of A Poet ! John Keats The life of a poet! Katrina Bartlett English per.2 May, 31 2000 pg. 1 He started at the pacific. All his men/looked at each other with a wild surmise--/silent, upon a peak in Darien?; ?Beauty is truth, truth Beauty, --that is all/ ye know on earth, and all ye need to know?; The author of these and many other lines fixed permanently in the shared consciousness of those who speak English, John Keats was an extremely unlikely candidate for poetic immortality. Born into a working-class family two centuries ago. Orphaned in childhood, his work was subjected to vicious attacks by established literary critics, dead in his mid-twenties from tuberculosis, he overcame all obstacles, not only to write some of the finest poems in the language, but also to form, in the minds of millions of people. John Keats was born in London on October 31, 1795. The first child of Thomas Keats he was a livery-stable keeper. And his wife Frances (Jennings) Keats was a housewife. Three more sons were born one of whom died in infancy. A daughter was born to the couple before Thomas's death in April 1804 from a horse accident. With four very young children to care for. Frances married a man named William Rawlings in 1805. The marriage was not successful and when the couple separated in the following year she and her four children went to live with her mother. John Keats received his earliest education at a private school in Enfield run buy the Reverend John Clarke. Among his classmates was the headmaster's son, Charles Cowden clarke. Who would be his lifelong friend. Keats's mother died of tuberculosis in February 1810, and in 1811 he was taken out of school and apprenticed to Thomas Hammond, a surgeon at Edmonton hospital. It was during this time that he began to read poetry seriously and to write it himself. His apprenticeship ended by mutual consent in 1815, and Keats went to London to study medicine at the joint school of St. Thomas's and Guy's Hospitals. In July 1816, he passed his examination as an apothecary, and worked until April of the next year as a medical practitioner. Keats's first volume entitled simply Poems was published in March 1817 and failed to attract much notice beyond a favorable review from Leigh Hunt. During that time Keats met Fanny Brawne, a young woman who throughout what appears to have been for him at least. Rather tormented relationship was to be the great love of his brief life and to whom he became engaged some time around the end of the year. By December 1818 when his brother Tom died of tuberculosis. On February 3, 1820 Keats had a coughing fit that led him to hemorrhage some dark arterial blood. With his medical training he recognized the gravity of the situation and he told his friend Charles Armitage Brown, ?That drop of blood is my death-warrant; I must die.? After another relapse in June 1820 Keats determined to go to Italy, from whose warmer and drier climate he hoped to find some relief of his suffering. On September 18, he sailed for Naples with a close friend the artist Joseph Severn. Keats never saw England or fanny again. The two men took lodgings in Rome, where severn loyally cared for Keats, who retained his gentle and uncomplaining nature until his death on February 23, 1821. He was not quite four months past his twenty-fifth birthday. In addition to his poetry Keats is the author of some of the most interesting letters by any literary figure. In their aesthetic theorizing, their insights into nature of the creative process and their constant display of a lovable and admirable personality, his letters not only complement his poetry but shows an intellectual grasp and penetration that is not always evident in the poems themselves. The life of Keats to some degree mythology by biographers and other enthusiasts has done as much as anything to fashion the popular image of the poet as a doomed and tortured soul. Scorned by an uncaring and pouring out his heart in spasms of unrequited love. And his work has likewise done much to shape the common

Crystals Essays - Crystallography, Phase Transitions, Free Essays

Crystals Essays - Crystallography, Phase Transitions, Free Essays Crystals Crystals What is a crystal? A crystal is a solid substance with definite geometric shapes and molecules that are arranged in a repeating pattern (Comptons ). Crystals have fixed angles between its faces, which have distinct edges. If the faces of a crystal can reflect light, then it will sparkle (Stangle). Crystals have constant angles because of the regular arrangement of its particles. There are seven types of crystals: cubic, tetragonal, orthorhombic, hexagonal, trigonal, monoclinic, and triclinic (Dr. Boyle). Crystals are classified by the shapes of their lattice or the regular, periodic configuration of particles (American Heritage). There are two different types of lattices. There are primitive lattices where there is only one lattice point per unit cell. There are also non-primitive lattices. They are the ones with more than one lattice point per unit cell. Crystals can also be classified by their physical/chemical properties. There are four types of crystals classified this way. They are covalent, metallic, ionic, and molecular (Dr. Boyle). A covalent crystal is a crystal which is one big molecule. They usually have extremely high melting points. An example of a covalent crystal is a diamond and zinc sulfide (Dr.Boyle). Metallic crystals have high melting points and densities. They are metal atoms which sit on lattice sites while the outer electrons from these atoms flow freely around the lattice (Dr. Boyle). Ionic crystals are crystals where the individual atoms do not have covalent bonds among themselves. These atoms are held together by electrostatic forces. They are also very hard and have a relatively high melting point. Sodium chloride (NaCl, salt) is an example of an ionic crystal (Dr. Boyle). Molecular crystals are crystals where there are recognizable molecules in the structure and the crystal is held together by non-covalnet interactions such as hydrogen bonding (Dr. Boyle). Sugar is an example of a molecular crystal. These crystals tend to have low melting points and are soft (Dr. Boyle). Crystals start growing by a process called nucleation. They are produced in solutions. The temperature and pH balance of the solutions must be controlled well. Crystals start growing one of two ways: unassisted nucleation, crystals that start with the molecules themselves or assisted nucleation, with the help of some solid matter already in the solution (Dr. Boyle). In unassisted nucleation, molecules of the solute are in the solution. Most of the time the solute molecules only see the solvent molecules around them. Sometimes the solute molecules can see other solute molecules and they become attracted to one another if the compound is solid and pure (Dr. Boyle). These molecules will stay together for a little while and will eventually be separated by other internal forces. However, sometimes the molecules will stay together long enough to meet up with a third, then a fourth, and then even a fifth solute molecule. When this happens the combined attraction force eventually becomes stronger than the other forces within the solution (Dr. Boyle). This attraction force tends to disrupt the formation of these aggregates. When this happens a protocrystal or a pre-crystal becomes a nucleation site (Dr. Boyle). As the protocrystal floats around in the solution, it encounters other solute molecules. These other molecules feel the attractive force of the protocrystal and decide to join the group of molecules (Dr. Boyle). This is when the crystal begins to grow. Crystals grow form the outside instead of the inside. The crystal molecule grows until it can no longer remain dissolved in the solution and falls out of the solution (Dr. Boyle). After this happens, the other solute molecules grow on the surface of the crystal. The crystal gets bigger until there is an equilibrium, or a state of a chemical reaction in which a forward and reverse reaction occur at equal rates so that the concentration of the reactant and product do not change with time (American Heritage). When there is equilibrium between the solute molecules in the crystal and the solute molecules in the solvent the crystal no longer get bigger (Dr. Boyle). In assisted nucleation the same process is followed as in unassisted nucleation. The only difference is that a solid surface such as a stone or brick acts as a meeting for all of the solute

Ecological Modernization Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Ecological Modernization - Essay Example It is a new approach that makes the society become more concerned with the environment issues that are affecting it. It is a new approach that is aimed at making the world have a new outlook at how it can integrate the modern technology not only in meeting g its n needs but also in meeting the needs of the environment as well. This new approach is taking place in several spheres including the changing role of science and technology, increasing important of marketing dynamics and various economical agents, the transformation in the role of the nation and state, modification in the new position and ideology of social movement in the society, and the changing discursive practices with integration to the new emerging ideologies. (Fisher and Freudenburg, 2001) There are many ways in which the concept of ecological modernization can be applied in the modern world and as far as we deal with the environment and the need to advance in technology. There are many supporters of the concept who have argued that the rationale behind the ecological Modernization is the need to develop in all aspects of the life. In this regard, the society needs to develop economically and socially and at the same time take care of the environment. What have been happenings in the world has acted as a wake up call to the whole world on the need to be conscious to the needs of the environment. In this regard, there is need for the world to become more focused on the changes that are taking place in the environment. The theory of ecological modernization assume that there are some way in which the world cause the modern technological in order to help to reduce consumption of the resource and at the same time increase efficiency in the use of resources. In this regard it calls for a change in the production process to be focused on reducing wastage of resource using some means like waste recycling and others. This has been one of the positions of the industrial ecology which has taken the concept of using the raw material sparingly in order to enhance sustainable development. (Cahill, 2002) Therefore one of the most important aspects of this theory is that the support needed to have sustainable development. As defined by the United Nations, sustainable development is the development that meets the needs of the present generation but in a way that it does not compromise the ability of the future generations to meet their needs as well. Therefore it postulates that we are guardians of the world for the future generation. In this regard we have to use the resources that we have in a sparingly manner so that we can enhance the ability of the future generation to meet their needs from the same resource. Ecological modernization calls for the use of modern technology in a way that it will help use to use our resources and at the same time help the future generation to use the same recourses. One of the strength in the development of the theory has been the support that the theory has been receiving from the civil societies. In this regard the rise of the civil society has been one of the most important factors that has enable the growth for the theory. This has been due to that fact that the civil

Education. What is your philosophy of Assessment Essay

Education. What is your philosophy of Assessment - Essay Example Still, it’s worth noting that teaching professionals must attend to the varieties of students, cultures, and grade levels when considering assessment strategies. As a high school chemistry and physics teacher, I have developed a number of assessment strategies that have formed my own philosophy to the assessment process. This essay considers my personal philosophy of assessment. One of the primary considerations I recognize in terms of assessment is developing a means of judging student participation and effort throughout the semester and course. One of the primary challenges I had when originally considering assessment was the nature of developing assessment strategies that are student specific, or measure objective standards of comprehension. While ideally classrooms are constituted by students of the same level of achievement, in reality this is not always the case. Early in my teaching career I recognized that I would have to make the difficult decision of requiring all st udents to achieve the same level of achievement.

Euripedes Essay Example for Free

Euripedes Essay The beginnings of literature are sowed in myths. They reflect the preoccupations of the myths celebrate the primal human emotions like love, hate, sexual desires, reproduction and heroism, some others are equally horrendous dealing with some heinous crimes like murder and rape. No matter what aspect of life do they reflect it is their universality that makes them popular in different cultures and times? The myth of Inos is such an example. The legend of Inos dates back many centuries before Christ to ancient Rome and Greece. According to the legend, Inos, the daughter of Cadmus is married by Athama, King of pre historic Minyans in the ancient Boeotian city of Orchomenus. King Athama falls in love with the innocent beauty of Inos and neglects his own wife, Nephele, who disappears in anger. They have two sons, Laerchus and Melicertes . Inos also nurses Dionysus, thus incurs the wrath of Hera, the wife of Zeus. Inos is later driven mad and in her madness kills herself and her two sons. She is later worshipped by ancient Greeks as Leucothea, the White Goddess. The legend of Inos is found in different parts of world with slight variations. Euripides one of the great giants of Greek tragedy was perhaps the first who used the legend of Inos in his tragedy Medea, when he composed it in 480 B. C. His tragedy complemented to the myth of Inos so well it became more popularly known as the legend of Medea. While in love with Jason, Euripides’ Medea helps him steal the golden fleece from her father, King Aeechis of Colchis. Thus, betraying her own clan. She is later abandoned by her husband, who leaves her to marry Creusa, daughter of Creon, king of Corinth. In despair Medea kills herself and her two sons. She however, goes unpunished and escapes in the dragon chariot. She takes refuge with king Aegeus of Athens. She later marries Achilles in the underworld and becomes immortal. Medea therefore, becomes the heroin of the tragedy, whereas, its her husband who suffers for betraying his wife. The legend of Medea, represents the cultural conflicts, racism and gender prejudices working on the individual lives of the characters. The employment of these phenomena in the evolution and degeneration of the characters, makes the legend universal in its appeal. It is for this reason that even in the twentyfirst century, writers incorporated the myth in the modern characters as in Wide Sargasso Sea by Jean Rhys. Set between the characters of the Carribean and England, Wide Sargasso Sea emphsise the above mentioned phenomena working on its individual characters. The novel is written in the post modern post colonial settings. Immediately after the emancipation of the Carribean blacks. It narrates the story of Anoinette later renamed as Bertha, belonging to dominica, a city of British owned Jamaica. She is married to an English man. It is eventually this relationship that derives young and innocent Annoinette to a mad woman Bertha, who later on commits suicide. The story narrates how the cultural, racial and gender prejudices makes individuals vulnerable. The novel is often seen as an adaptation of Charlotte Bronte’s Jane Eyre written in 1886, with the same story outline, however, the real source dates back to the legend of Medea or more precisely the myth of Inos. Like medea, she marries a foreigner, and is later exploited by him for her racial inferiority and gender bias. Euripedes’ medea is an enchantress. Her weakness as a woman is exposed when exploited by her husband. She, however, comes out as a resolute and vindictive person. She is portrayed as strong and completely in control of her self. Till the end when she kills her kids, she is contemplative and logically derives herself to commit their murder. Whereas, Rhys’s Bertha is doomed to her madness by the social as well as biological factors. The novel seems more of an approach that how the social factors catalyses the biological deseases. Her death, however, gives her the same triumph that Medea enjoyed over her husband. For Rochester, she remained his property even in her madness. He says towards the end, â€Å"even though she is mad, she is mine†. This possessiveness is given away by her through her death. Just as Medea escapes unpunished in a dragon chariot before her husband’s eyes. It is interesting to note that how a twentyfirst century african woman writer incorporates the same myth used by the Greek tragedian of fifth century Before Christ. A deeper study regarding the history of the myth will unfold that how the myth of Inos undergoes different versions through out centuries and claims its authority in various cultures. After Euripedes, Publius Ovidius Naso, the Roman poet of 49 B. C. used the story in his own work which influenced Lucius Anneus Seneca the famous Hispano- Roman tragedian of 4 century B. C. at Corduba (Cordoba). Scholars believe that Seneca might have brought the original legend of Inos to Spain thorugh his own intellectual influence. However, the inscriptions on the stones at Maikop, 56 miles east of the Black Sea near Colchis, reveal the story of Jason and his Argonauts. According to the legend of Medea, Jason and his Argonauts travel to Colchis and it is there that he meets Medea. It seemed through the amazing discovery, that the whole legend or some parts of the legend might be true. The pheonicians of the 12th to 8th centuries before Christ, then present at colchis a region of the Western Georgian Socialist Soviet Republics, are supposed to transport the legend to Spain later when they themselves settled in the Iberian peninsula. It is through Spain that the legend passed on to Africa and from there to America along with slave trade. It is exceptionally popular with the Afro- Americans, who imagine her to be in real, wandering in dark forests and shrieking. Toni Morrison, another of the celebrated Afro- American writer draws a like wise figure of a phantom in her novel â€Å"Beloved†. In whatever version the legend of Medea appear, it projects very effectively the apparent triumph of the male sex over female, whereas, it is the weaker sex that despise the yolk of her stronger counter part and sets themselves free in the ultimate analysis. Therefore, the story becomes one of betrayal, vengeance and triumph. It is the ultimate triumph of the weak over the strong that the story remains a favourite with the writers and readers alike especially by the women writers in patriarchal societies.

Oman Essay -- essays research papers

Oman is a small country located in the northeast by the gulf of Oman and southeast by the Arabian Sea, southeast by Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The capitol of this country is Muscat. Oman covers an area of about 119,500 sq mi. Oman borders Saudi Arabia, Yemen, and the United Arab Emirates. The Oman government, from what I have read, is ran by a sultan and seems to be somewhat democratic. The population is overwhelmingly Arab, but significant minorities of Indians, Pakistanis, and East Africans are found in the principal ports. The majority of the population is Ibadhi Muslim; Sunni Muslims form the other major religious group. Arabic is the official language. The Life expectancy on average, is 70.25 years, however females seem to live longer; males: 68.31 years female: 72.29 years (1995 est.). There are about 6 children born to each woman. That just shows how much they value family as well as procreation in itself. The Languages are Arabic (official), English, Baluchi, Urdu, and Indian dialects. (1) One of the most interesting pieces I came across about Oman is how the women are treated. Usually when you think of Middle East women you assume they are oppressed or considered to be uneducated. However the women of Oman play a more active and visible role in society than in most of the Arabian Peninsula, where the role of women is still restricted. They have received encouragement and support from the government, which provides schooling and university education for girls on a par with that for boys, and has decreed that women should be given career opportunities and equal pay. In the capital many women now have jobs, especially with the government. In the countryside women have always played an active role in the agricultural communities. For the most part Oman women are not veiled, although the women of some tribes still wear the burqa or facemask and black cloak, the abaya. After viewing many pictures of the women of this culture the majority of Oman women, however, wear very colorful clothes arranged in loose and flowing layers. They are generally not self-effacing and may be willing to talk to strangers, once the ice has been broken. But they are deeply Muslim and should always be treated with deference and respect. (1) However, the film I chose to watch is called Osama. This film describes the life of women during the Taliban rule. Althoug... ...far as what websites are available. The print media is mainly available in Arabic, and only about 2 Omani papers are in both English and Arabic. Tourist attractions such as hotels, may carry more of a variety of national papers. Overall Oman is a very interesting country. They are progressing more into the future and at the same time not leaving their heritage or culture behind, but instead modernizing it. The sultan of this country has been in reign for over 30 years and has done nothing but allowed his country to progress. The fact that this is one of the few Arabic countries that actually allows women certain rights will hopefully educate other Arabic countries about equalization or steps towards allowing women to be freer. Example of Business Report Essay

Executive Summary The purpose of this report was to investigate a student club at a private university in Jakarta, which is called BNEC (Bina Nusantara English Club) at BINUS University. BNEC is a non-profit English organization for undergraduate students of any major studying at BINUS University. Its main purpose is to develop its members’ English skills by providing TOEFL, Debate, Scrabble, Spelling Bee, Public Speaking, and Performing classes. BNEC has actively participated in various national and international competitions. The strengths of this organization can be seen from many national and international achievements that this unit has achieved. The main reason for its success was due to its strong leadership sustainability, which allowed the changing leaders and committees of the unit always manage to accomplish the set targets and goals. Moreover, its tight selection  process for the new members has resulted in highly proficient English participants, readily supporting the arranged activities. Lastly, the high-quality training programs available have contributed to a rigorous and intensive practice of using English for public performances. However, the unit has some areas for improvement. For example, the communication styles between supervisors and subordinates were sometimes problematic, as all participants underwent the learning process of teamwork communication. The unit has also developed a certain degree of arrogance and pride, which even widened the gap between the unit with other lower proficient students studying in the university, and thus developing and strengthening its exclusivity. After taking both strengths and weaknesses into consideration, it is recommended that BNEC should begin to develop more social programs, carefully designed to help their fellow students outside their organization in the university, or even to other marginal members of the society living near the university, to improve their English proficiency and establish BINUS University and its surrounding areas as the English as a Second Language (ESL) area. 1. Introduction 1.1 Purpose The purpose of this report was to investigate a student club at BINUS University, namely BNEC (Bina Nusantara English Club), and recommend a suitable solution to its problems and some suggestions for its future development. 1.2 Scope When investigating BNEC, it was important to consider its current conditions in terms of its organizational structure, management/leadership style, materials development, marketing/promotion, programs and training. 1.3 Method The information used in this report was collected by having some interviews with personnel in BNEC, including the chairman, secretary, treasurer, promotion team, program coordinators, and some members. 1.4 Limitations PICs and members were sometimes difficult to meet Important information is difficult to collect †¦. 1.5 Assumptions It has been assumed that BNEC has not proved effective and efficient in running the organization. As the members actively participate in its programs and activities, it has been assumed that the implementation of its training programs shows little contribution to improving their proficiency levels. As most BNEC programs have generated many awards and prizes, it is assumed that there are still programs that do not result in significant achievements. 1.6 Background BNEC was established in 1992. It is the only English-based student unit at BINUS University. Its main purpose is to develop the member’s English skill by providing TOEFL, Debates, Scrabble, Spelling Bee, Public Speaking, and Performing classes. BNEC also actively participates in a variety of national and international competitions. It has achieved many achievements. Besides these, it is also widely acknowledged for its event organizing. BNEC was awarded The Best Student Organization in 2010, 2011, and 2012 by BINUS University. 2.
